Airway Safety

Patients with obstructive sleep apnea are at higher risk for adverse advents, especially due to opioids. The American Society of Anesthesiologists supports routine screening of obstructive sleep apnea upon admission because of increased perioperative and postoperative risks in these patients.

Strategies and Tools

Participating hospitals implemented and monitored standardized processes for screening all patients upon admission and prior to surgery for obstructive sleep apnea. The hospitals also implemented a new documentation form to be used on all intubations that occur outside of the operating room.
