Injuries from Falls and Immobility

Hospital falls are a serious patient safety problem, accounting for nearly 84% of all inpatient incidents. Among adults 65 years or older, falls are the leading cause of injury-related death. A fall resulting in a serious injury can cost an additional $13,300 and increase the length of stay by 6.27 days for each patient.

The strategies reviewed below can greatly reduce the number of falls. Together, we can make a difference. Our goal is to reduce falls by over 40 percent by the end of 2014.
